Yale is one of the oldest international brands and arguably the most popular company in the locking industry. Yale's history is the most important innovation that has influenced the entire lock industry.
Yale has its origins in North America. The Yale family decided to immigrate to the New World from North Wales. Several generations later, around 1840, Linus Yale Senior began designing and manufacturing a series of innovative, high-performance locks at his Yale lock store in Newport, New York. He specialized in hand-made bank locks.
Linus Yale Sr.'s son joined his father in 1850 and quickly became an expert in mechanics and security, and also refined and implemented his father's tooth locking pin. In 1862, Linus Yale Junior introduced system security solutions based on combination locks in banks. The solutions introduced by Linus Yale Jr. have become the standard in banking security in the US and are still so today.
Yale Jr. also worked on a castle based on a mechanism used by the ancient Egyptians over 4,000 years ago. Patents granted to Yale in 1861 and 1865 resulted in the most important invention - the Yale cylinder lock. With groundbreaking inventions and innovations, Linus Yale Junior has changed the locking industry forever.
Yale Jr. with associate Henry Towne, they founded Yale & Towne in 1868, employing 35 people. Thanks to Yale patents and continuous improvement of solutions, the company grew dynamically and the Yale brand gained an excellent reputation.
Soon the company expanded into manual chain hoists, battery powered transport trolleys, and in 1879 a padlock was introduced. At that time, Yale & Towne also acquired Norton and H. and T. Vaughan Ltd.
At the beginning of the 20th century, the company was operating worldwide and employed more than 12,000 people. Throughout the 20th century, the company has grown intensively, which made Yale Castle famous all over the world.
In August 2000, Yale was acquired by the ASSA ABLOY Group and has since become an important part of a global leader in security.
